Han Yu

Also known as: Han Yü
768–824
Hán

Tang dynasty essayist who initiated the Confucian revival against Buddhism. His Yuándào (原道) reasserted the Confucian "Way" and defined a lineage of transmission (道統) from the sage-kings through Confucius and Mencius. Without his polemic, the Neo-Confucian movement would lack its founding impulse.
